Ok so I never believe anything in infomercials, but this new bowflex select tech I have to admit has sparked some interest.

Seems to be legit..turn the dial to adjust the weight of the dumbbell..but also too good to be true..

I'm not expert on equipment..what do you guys think about select tech?

Waste of money, for what it does- Those dumbbells are expensive as hell, and, well, they're just dumbbells. Heavy things you lift to work your muscles. Leave me with a couple of handles and some plates any day- Way less expensive, just as heavy- (You can get more weight on a set of olympic handles anyway) And they get the job done. Sure, it's a pain changing plates around, but come on- If you're going to get lazy anywhere, it shouldn't be in the weight room, right?

I completely agree with you cpl. I mean, $400 for only 110 lbs.? I'm sure we could come up with something half as easy with the combined ideas of actual users of the equipment and get at least 80-110lbs. per dumbbell for half the cost.

They are only selling the bowflex name there.

I think some of you are missing the point of the selecttech dumbbells and their target audience. Their target audience is not gym rats or people trying to get huge. It's the average person who would rather workout at home, wants equipment such as the selecttech dumbbells that will help get them through their workout more quickly but still give them an effective workout, and has limited space or just does not want piles of weights around the house. Many people do not need a weight greater than the 52.5 lbs/dumbbell that the selecttech dumbbells provide to meet their fitness goals.

Nah. I get that they have a target audience, otherwise they wouldn't be selling- It just doesn't make much sense to me to spend so much money on convenience, I guess. Let's face it, there's nothing about staying in shape that's convenient- And yes, having weights laying around can be a pain, but that's what plate trees are for. As for getting through a workout quicker, it's never a good idea to speed through it- The proper amount of rest between sets is essential to get the most out of your workout, even if it is just enough time to change the plates on your dumbbells.

I wonder how many people who buy these things will use them for more than a month?

I got a SoloFlex when I was 18. I used it all the time on a regular basis until I joined 24 Hour in Jr. College. So 2 years until I was close to a gym and used free weights.

At home, I didn't have any place for free weights much. Nor did I have a spotter. So this was a perfect machine to just get in shape. I didn't get huge. But I worked out every day. And eventually that lead me to the gym, free weights and bodybuilding.

It was a starter or if you are just into fitness, a nice machine to have a home to workout and stay in shape.

cpl,

circuit training at home is certainly much easier with something like the selecttech dumbbells/powerblocks/probell. I currently have probell dumbbells which are similar to the selecttech but only go up to 30 lbs. I have had those for a couple of years. I will most likely buy the selecttech dumbbells since 30 lbs is not quite enough but 52.5 lbs is as much as I will ever need for my goals. My current home gym consists of the dumbbells, a weight vest, a pull-up bar, and a balance ball. That's all I will ever need. All of that takes up very little space. Plate trees take up much more space and would be an eye sore in my guest bedroom. I can just slide my dumbbells under my dresser out of sight and out of the way. I understand that I'll never "get huge" with this equipment but I know that and that's not my goal. I can get a very effective workout at home using just dumbbells. If I was trying to bulk up I would certainly join a gym.

Select Tech DB are not as good as other makes. I did not like them for they are very long wide and this I felt was too cumbersome. I also find them unbalanced. When you select with a quick spin of a dial on either end you lock certain weights into the handle which is cool but not very balanced when you are lifting it out of the rack, which you also need to set it down. I have been most happy with a set of power blocks. Again they are costly but the grip is nice that you do not have to grasp so hard, and is very comfortable. They are also adjustable and can grow along with you. mine go from 5-45 pounds, but another handle can bump it up another 15-20 pounds. There is also a model that goes up to 100+ pounds. Try them yourself ans see which works best for you?

I have seen these in stores broken.  I have never seen a broken dumbbell though.
