According to most body fat charts...

25% body fat for a 16 year old puts your in the above average category.

That doesn't jive with your signature which says...

Start--> Weight: 215 LBM: 180

If you were 215 lbs at 25% body fat, you'd have roughly 161.25 LBM

So either the signature isn't right, it's your ultimate goal or you didn't take your body fat measurements correctly.

Bodyfat is stored energy, but it also can effect health.

I would say 25% is high verging on very high...based on the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition guidelines.

The longer you hold onto fat, the more of a relationship it develops to your hormonal system and other systems...

I suggest getting it down to 20% or less.
Weight: 215 LBM: 180  Fat Mass 35
That is 16% Bodyaft....where do you get 25%?

So I am above average does that mean I am at risk or something. What do you think I should do to get myself down to the proper bodyfat percentage and what is the proper bodyfat percantage for my age? P.s. I have gained more weight I should update my sig, lol it passed over me.

Thanks for the help

I was at school and went on a scale that measures bodyfat and it gave me 25%. Plus it was a few months ago and I have gained more weight so my sig is off, I have to find the proper info now.

Oh you are so married with kids... I KNOW what you're saying my man!!

  1. Figure out your current situation
  2. Figure out short term & long term goals
  3. Calculate the calories you need per day
  4. Calculate the protein you need per day
  5. Track your diet via Fitday.com
  6. Adjust your training to include cardio (if you don't)
  7. Take weekly scale, visual and fat caliper measurments
Men's and Women's Body Fat Measurement Charts

Keep in mind you ARE 16 and growing and changing.  Just a consideration in all of this.

Strength then Muscle then endurance and then fat loss....

Speeds your metabolism and keeps your body adapting.

you can be losing fat the whole time, even though it is not a goal until the latter stage.

I was at school and went on a scale that measures bodyfat and it gave me 25%

Unless something has changed, those electrical impedance scales BLOW...

They told me I was upper 30% body fat.

What crap.

Calipers and some other more reliable methods say I'm 13%.

Don't trust those types of scales.  They are very inaccurate for most people.

those electrical impedance scales BLOW

BINGO.

Body composition is only useful as a comparitive measurement.

One time measures are no good.  Look in that link I gave under tracking changes.

No, excess cardio will cause you to lose some muscle...

It did:

I am trying to gain muscle while losing fat so will gaining muscle help lose fat?

Muscle is the site on the body where fat is burned.  The more muscle you have, the better your fat burning machinery!

That link talks about calipers...

RE: Bodyfat Question - Saturday, July 01, 2006 10:18 PM
Q:  what did you mean by figure out your current situation?

A:  Where are you in regards to what you eat?  Where are you trying to go?

Be specific!

I want to lose weight = I want to lose 15 lbs of fat and be at 15% body fat in 1 year

Make short term goals (1 lb a week of fat).  Chart it.

It's very hard to get to someplace if you have no idea where you currently are and even less of an idea of how to get there.

Q:  should I be doing more cardio than normal because my bodyfat is above average?(I'm starting monday that routine danmirage gave me, cause of my carpal which I haven't had symptoms for a week)

A:  Not because your body fat is above average per say but becuase fat loss might be your primary goal.  If I wanted to lose fat at a rapid pace, I would focus on eating slighly below my needs as to not starve myself and bump up the cardio to increase my calories burned.

Q:  what are fat caliper measurements?

A:  Accu-Measure Calipers

Extremely popular!  Very cheap!  Very accurate once you practice and get the hang of it!

Q:  the link doesn't work

A:  Fixed

Q:  Also I am trying to gain muscle while losing fat so will gaining muscle help lose fat?

A:  Listen to me.. NO really listen to this podcast on the subject...

If you are reading this, then you have asked this question...

"Can I build muscle and lose fat at the same time?"

Right.

Just pick ONE goal.

But overall, the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism =  a leaner you!

Lose fat
Build muscle
Lose fat
Build muscle

Bodybuilding goes in cycles.  The BEST do it in cycles of fat burning and mass building.

Ultimately you will burn more fat, build more muscle and end up bigger, stronger, faster (hehe) and leaner because you picked a goal and focused.

As you will see, losing fat and building muscle require totally different calorie needs.

Which makes it nearly impossible to do either of them well (without being a true beginner or on drugs).
