Body Fat % - Sunday, March 11, 2007 11:24 AM
is there any way to calculate my body fat% without a caliper?, if so how is it??

Which is the body fat% to start performing a body cutt or a body bulk in the gym???

There are a couple of different ways to calculate body fat based on body measurements. They are much less accurate than calipers though. There are some pretty sophisticated methods, like underwater weighing that are even less accessible than calipers. Calipers only cost a few bucks, so they're worth getting.

The answer to the second question depends on your goals.

From my understanding, hydrostatic testing (underwater weighing) is the most accurate.  I found an available service near me by searching in google "Hydrostatic Testing (city)" just put in ur city.  Anyways...I have heard that skinfold testing (caliper testing) is not so much accurate in calculating actual body fat %, but is extremely accurate in evaluating your progress from test to test.

For instance, if you got a caliper reading of 18.4% and then a month later you got 18.0%, you can be confident in the results that you lost .4% body fat.   Your true BF% might actually have gone from 21.4% to 21%, but you can still see how there is a definite value to caliper testing.  If anyone disagrees, feel free to comment, as I look forward to learning more and more.

I was, in fact, coming over here to this forum to post a question on hydrostatic testing so check that out too.  Cya and good luck.  Oh, and as to whether you want to know body fat% for when ur cutting or bulking, you want to know it for both.  For fitness you can use BF% as a major focal point to guage your progress and guage what you are doing.  Good luck, and have fun!
