- Big Guy- Protein or No Protein? Fat loss or weight gain?
-
Sunday, November 02, 2008 8:13 AM
G'day all i'm Budah and i'm a newbie! I'm chasing some advice that i can't really find anywhere else! I'm 6 foot 4, 270 pounds, 20 year old Guy. Just been going at heavy weights for about a year and a half now and i'm currently benching about 180 pounds. I am struggling with gaining mass and definition at the same time, it's either the one or the other, if i diet while exercise i lose weight and gain definition and if i do the opposite i get weight gain and mass! Should i be using a protein powder at my weight and size? will it be a benefit or a burden? or should i stay on my current path of starvation mixed with heavy weights? I also have seem to hit a wall with bicep mass gain and max weight on a comfortable bench set of 12. Any help will be truely appreciated! PS. I am after large bulk!

If your looking to bulk do starting strength because at your size you have a fair ammount of quick gains i'd say, and your right it is VERY hard to get bigger and get more definition so do a bulk where you will gain some bodyfat then cut back down and repeat. Yes you should use protein shakes (whey).

I would definitely use protein, no matter weight or size. A lot of people believe that protein only causes one to add mass and/or get fat. This just isn't the case. Do some research on the web. Protein is essential for muscle recovery and building. I'm 5'10'' and 240lbs, and I consume at least 30g of protein a day. Or at least I try to... I'll probably consume somewhere in the range of 60g of protein on days I lift. Unfortunately, I don't always lift every day because of my full school schedule. I can do it... I did do it and frankly just need to get my own **** together and do that. I digress... Yes, I'd use protein... Even if you are trying to lose weight, I'd be taking protein for the muscle building and recovery benefits.

Hey man. Good to see you around. Its always good to have new blood floating around here. It sounds like though, that you've got alot to learn. And thats ok. Nobody just woke up and knew this stuff so we've all had to learn. Follow this link and follow the first link once you're there. You've got alot to learn but if you've been hitting it strong for about a year you're well on your way.

You should be getting at least 1 gram of protein maybe 1.5 grams perpound of bodyweight. 30-60 grams is not enough for a severly underweight ethiopian to live off of.

Thanks for all your help guys, it really is an eye opener to see how important protein is for muscle development and recovery, rathern than just making you big and fat. Thanks for the support, i'm starting on the protein soon with heavy weight training, it should be interesting to see a change in muscle bulk with the protein as compared to without. Cheers for being such a great community hey, best body building forum out! PS. Any thoughts thoughts of serving suggestions for a person of my size?
