Bicep "rip" while doing preacher curls - Wednesday, May 10, 2006 5:46 PM ( #1 )
Need some advice/info.  I was doing my usual workout (by usual I mean my normal routine with the normal wieghts I do, nothing out of the ordinary for the past year or so).  When I started my second set of individual preacher curls (50lbs, again nothing crazy) on my left arm ( I am left handed and that is my stronger arm).

 I heard what sounded like a tear or rip noise (brief but distinct), no immediate pain other than a quick notion of uh-oh. I stopped lifting immediately and rested, put icy hot on my bicep... well I can fully move my arm and there seems to be no movement damage,,, but the arm feels to be constantly in a state of being "semi-flexed" and an amount of pain does go up the bicep when I lift any type of weight.   I do have bicipital tendonitis in my right arm and it is definetly not that.  But I am slightly concerned, so before I wheel off to the Docs, anybody ever have the brief "tear noise" while lifting ??  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You.

Never experienced it myself, but you need to get that checked out ASAP.

A true bicep tear or separation can affect only one of the two heads of the biceps, it doesn't have to be a complete tear.  In any case, when the biceps (or part of it tears) it retracts up into a flexed state -you may have seen photos of bodybuilders with torn biceps tha look like a golf-ball wedged up under their front deltoid.  Surgical reattachment of the tendon can be accomplished, but you have to act fast -the longer a muscle stays detached, the more likely it is to sieze up in that position for good.

If you haven't completely separated it, the swelling could be just inflammation caused by the trauma.  In any case, get it checked out.

Biceps tears (even full-blown separations) are often not completely debilitating, and often aren't anywhere near as painful as pectoral tears; since the biceps are not the only muscle involved in flexing the forearm, some people can even continue training almost normally without noticing a problem -but it will limit your training later if you leave it undiagnosed.

veggeep;
     Thank you for the info, I am heading to the Doc tomorrow AM and we will see how it goes.  I am fairly concerned about the turn around because I really do enjoy working out and if it is rest for like a month or so, I feel I will lose too much. But I will do what I have too.

thanks

It is very much possible to tear both heads.

my grandpa tore his bicep right off like u hear about in the 70's pushing a car outta the ditch, he thought nothing of it because it barely hurt and today he has half a bicep. the doctor said that if he would have came in ASAP he could have reattached it.

A guy at work tore his and they had to go in and reattach everythin and the tendons or ligaments. He was in bad pain. There should have been some obvious signs if it tore, so what was the outcome.
