Best Butt Excercises?
-
Saturday, August 14, 2004 9:11 AM
I usually do squats to work my rear. Are there any other really good excercises for toning your rear? Also does anyone know if there is an advantage to going wall squats (squats while leaning back on a wall) vs normal squats? Cuz the squat machine on the Cross Bow platinum machine is set up like a wall squat & they say it takes pressure off your knees.

The only advantage to a machine like that, or wall squats, is some added safety- But it does take away from the benefits of the exercise. Free weight squats can't be beat for building muscle, because basically your whole body becomes involved in steadying yourself under all that weight. With a wall squat, or any machine that limits movement, you no longer need to balance, so all those stabilizers that would have gotten a hell of a workout are left out. Also, while some machines say they take the pressure off the knees, the opposite could actually be true- A lot of people say that when you perform squats with free weights, if you have good form, your body goes through a very natural movement that isn't exactly straight up and down. When you perform squats on a smith machine, your body is forced into a straight up and down movement throughout the exercise, which some say is not so good for the knees. When it comes to other exercises you can do for your glutes, don't leave out the lunges. You can also hold two dumbells and step up and down onto a relatively high platform- Like a bench, for example.

We have a machine at our gym that's sort of like a leg curl but it's specifically for your glutes. I'd personally stick with squats (paralell or even a touch below for that good stretch) and lunges.
