Belt me! - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 3:54 PM
When is a good time to use a belt. I don't use one currently. Is there a weight that you should start to use one? I see a couple of guys running around at the gym with the thing on for every lift they are doing. Surely that can't help you.

those guys who use it for everything probably use it for the security of it. Some people feel like they are hulk with it on...

your body can tell you when you should probably use a belt. But you should save the belt for when your doing heavier weight. Dont use it all the time.

And when using a belt make sure you buy one that is the same length all around. A lot of belts are bigger in the back and smaller in the front, which defeats the purpose of the belt. The belt is there for your Ab's to brace up against to help protect your back.

I usually use mine for any squats or deadlifts over 300lb's currently.
current 5rm On the texas method
Squat:340
Deadlift:380
Bench:265

currently 233 lb's
goal is eventually a lean 220 play some kind of pro football
Target 40yd time: 4.5

I never use a belt.  Generally though if you start feeling pressure under your bellybutton and above your groin you can use one.  If you want to see what the pressure feels like go to one of those machines where you lay on your stomach and do hamstring curls.  Do a heavy set of them, that's the pressure.

Thanks Yet,
I currently do not use one. I was just thinking of getting in the 600 club and how unstable my back is. It may help me hold it together if I have one. Now I have to research which is best.

You gotta love the tossers at the gym that prance around in their belts and pot bellies. Better yet, I love the guys who use wrist straps for everything. Today I saw a guy thinking he was all cool because he used wrist straps in a lat pull down. The best was when I saw a guy benching with his wrist straps. Too bad noone told him he's lifiting with his palms.

I think some people like to feel like they are using all kinds of equipment. Makes them feel more olympic or something.

I've heard of those straps. Never had they back in the day. Don't know how to use them. Dunno if I will once someone shows me how either.????

Thanks SK3000.
I may need one if I am going to get a T-shirt for the 1000 club. I have not attempted a max lift in a few years.
