Behind the neck pull downs
-
Thursday, October 09, 2008 5:30 PM
I tried the behind the neck pull downs last night. I felt it isolating my upper back/middle and lower traps. I have read that this exercise can be dangerous to the rotar calf so I did a light weight. My question is... I seem to be getting un even pull downs for some reason. Not sure why but my left side is getting all the workout and my right side gets nothing. It seems to be hitting more my right shoulder area. I have tried concentrating on the right side but I fail. What am I doing wrong? I'm right handed and I cant seem to isolate the right side as much as the left. Is t here a way to do that exercise with one arm? Any advice would be appreciated. Edit: facing a mirror, as far as I can tell I am pulling equally. If I pull more with my right I hit more my shoulder. Thanks :)

If I was trying to isolate my lats I wouldn't be doing this exercise. I find this movement affective for my upper back area which is why I would like to keep doing it and isolate both sides.

First of all, you can't isolate two things at once. It's an oxymoron. Secondly, lat pulldowns and pullups are the same movement. Pullups are better for growth, and functional strength. Behind the neck is a terrible idea, don't do it.

most people who do behind the head will mess up their shoulders/rotator cuffs. follow the advice in the thread. Pull ups are MUCH better for what you are trying to accomplish. You may also want to look into BB rows. *Underlined, bolded and italicized important part :)

No, 90% of people who do behind the head will royally **** their rotator cuff. Do you even know what a rotator cuff is? Your entire shoulder in terms of bone structure is just a ball in a shell with no support holding it in place but 4 muscles, 4 tiny muscles covering that ball and you're willing to completely screw that up for the sake of 'isolating your back'? BB rows with excellent form and great posture, DB Rows with great form and great posture, Machine Rowing, pull-ups, DEADLIFTS, such a fantastic variety of amazing back exercises and you consciously choose BEHIND-THE-NECK pulldowns? It's one of the most unnatural movements in the history of exercises. For the love and respect of your daily upper body movements and general comfort, never do that crap again.
