Basketball fundamentals - Thursday, November 23, 2006 6:59 PM
does anyone have any tips to when it comes to improving court awareness? Sometimes i feel I get clueless on the court when it comes to knowing the right time to shoot, pass, dribble.  I think I have a bad habit of sometimes focusing to much on my individual defender, or the basketball when I'm dribbling. Do you guys have any drills to improve these problems?

I think you'll like this site. Check out the improving skills section. It has some step by step drills that should help you out.

The best way to develop court awareness is to play. Drills will develop your fundamentals, but getting a better flow for the game can only come from playing. Truth be told, when I play I dont really have to think much about what I am going to do I have already been through most of the scenarios before and it just comes naturally. The more you play the more comfortable you will beceome.

Looking at the ball is something that you can improve with practice. You'll eventually get used to the fact the ball will come back to you whether you look at it or not. I'm not sure what focusing on your individual defender means. If you could clear that up I might be able to help.

He means like...concentrating on what you are going to do with the one guy that's in your face instead of lookin for the open pass, or lane to drive. Just another one of those things that comes from just playin the game man...

He means looking for a defender...like Rainman said, as you play more you start looking at driving in towards the basket and drawing more defenders, thus giving you a chance to pass the ball back to someone on the outside.  You will be able to develop on court awareness by more drills....if you have any question, pm me.  I'm a coach/teacher and i'll help you out with some drills if you wish.  Good Luck!!
