Baseball: I need accurate cannon arm - Saturday, September 09, 2006 3:25 PM ( #1 )
Hi, I play outfield and I need some drills (with a baseball) or weight excersises to help me develop range and accuracy. My goal is to throw from the middle of center field all the way to the catcher's mound (with some accuracy). Right now all I can think of baseball drill wise is to tape a target at onto a wall, walk away a few 100 yards, and then lob the baseball at the paper at best I can.

The best thing you can do is practice launching it towards the catcher.

If you work out your arms and shoulders too much you will find that you pull the muscles more often during games.
If it wasn't painfully difficult then you didn't do it right

In the preseason when i am trying to get in shape for the season i do a lot of longtoss. Longtoss builds up armstrength probably better than any lift you can do. Some lifts like frontal raises, side raises, and military press that mainly focus on shoulders will also help. Also there is no such thing as a catchers mound and im sure that is just a typo. Also, if you want accuracy make sure u dont drop your elbow because that will cause the baseball to curve. The ball will also curve if your arm angle isnt 12-6. If you ever watch vlad guerero who arguably has the best arm in baseball throws right over the top in a 12-6 motion and his throws dont curve at all when he throws home.

lardy hey I hope you haven't just gone out and started cold. man in High School I had one of those "Peyton Manning Lazer Rocket arms" and I thought it was the coolest thing in the world to come out of the weight room in december and throw 65 yard bombs to all of my linemen buddies, because I could and they all said i should have played QB. But man I'm only 20 and now when I go to throw a football I really have to warm up first so my arm doesn't feel like its going to fall off in 10 minutes.
The point warm up a lot before going out and launching them. but yeah the only way is to practice doing it.

and make sure you're form is perfect. Everybody thought I was awesome at basketball and throwing a football for a 300 pounder but I had a strong arm and my form for both were/ are almost perfect.

I've used over turned trash cans to throw into from long distances, trying to throw into the entrance of the dugout from outfield. For football I always used big trash cans sitting upright and light poles for accuracy. Sounds lame, I know.

Long toss and being consistant with every throw that you make..same motion all the time to be consistant.  Heavy lifting is not the best to strengthing your arm but definatly do rotator cuff exercises with weights and resistance bands.  That should help a lot..it did for me and keep long tossing...
