Back to the basics and I have questions! - Thursday, October 19, 2006 4:32 PM
I have been working out for about 4 years now. Working out 3-4 times a week usually and each muscle once per week. I always incorporate all of the core lifts and always use free weights. I have made lots of gains in my 4 years of working out but I want to put on some serious mass. I have never did a powerlifting routine because I have always been confused about it. Can someone post up a good powerlifitng routine. Also since you are doing basically the same lifts every other day/3times a week it doesnt seem like that would be enough time for your muscles to recover? Im use to working each muscle directly once per week. My next question is about training until failure. I have always trained every set until failure. Should I not be doing this? I appreciate your guys help. Thanks. -[Matt]

You can handle lifting more often because you're not going for hypertrophy, you're going for strength.  When lifting 1-4 reps and such you have less muscular breakdown.  Since you do so much weight, you spend a lot of sets with light weight just working up to the serious weight, so you should still have plenty of energy by the time you get to the big #s.

For powerlifting stuff, look into the routines done at Westside Barbell.  Their main thing is to have a speed day, and 3 days later, a heavy day.  Speed day you do speed bench or speed squats... 50-60% of 1Rep Max, low reps, very high sets, rep speed as fast as possible.  The heavy days are extremely low rep... basically going for a new 1Rep Max every time.  I encourage you to check out the Westside stuff.
