OK folks. For the next few weeks, I'll be evaluating Avant Labs new product, SesaThin. I got myself a supply, and I've started taking it this week. The first two weeks, however, will probably be done sort of half-assed, as it'll likely take a week to get used to adding it to my routine, plus I'll be going to Vegas for a few days, and I'm not sure how well I'll be able to use it while on the road.

My first impressions:

  • The taste isn't too bad. It tastes a lot like sesame oil, so unlike something like flax oil, it doesn't need to be mixed in a shake or salad or anything to mask the flavor. I'm not going to want to pour it over ice cream or pancakes or anything, but I can slurp back a dose without needing a chaser.
  • I'm not sure if I should refrigerate it or not... It doesn't say so on the label, but it seems like the kind of thing you want to keep cool (though it gets kind of thick and nasty when it's cold).
  • Even though the label tells you to take 1/2 - 1 capful per dose, I've found that it's much better to take it with a spoon. Why? If you take it out of the cap, when you put the cap on, some of it drools out over the neck of the bottle and makes an oily mess. An eyedropper type thingee in the cap for dosing would have been very nice.
  • You have to remember to shake it before taking a dose, because the stuff seems to separate. For some reason I have yet to remember to shake it before I take off the cap and look in the bottle... I don't know why I mention this other than the fact that it aggravates me... why am I such a dumbass.

I have laid out my diet and workouts so I should be losing about 1 - 1.5 pounds/week without the sesamin. We'll see if there's any added benefit from adding it to my routine. I plan on adding an update here every week or two to let you know how things are working out...

Week one update:

OK, I've been pretty good taking my SesaThin this week, missing just two doses all week, and given the fact that I can barely remember to put on my pants in the morning, that's a pretty good run...

Now for the results: I'm down 1.5 pounds from last week, which is pretty good, considering that I've missed three straight days of workouts this week (I've been prepping pretty hard for a presentation I'm giving at a conference on Monday and blowing off the workouts). My meals have been good, but I did some pretty bad snacking this week: one donut, one danish, and a bunch of bites of chocolate covered almonds and raisins (I made a cake for a coworkers birthday last week, and I made some candy to take into work this week so I could get rid of the leftover ganache and almonds... unfortunately I was very weak while it was cooling).

So all in all, I'm pretty surprised I lost the weight that I did. I have no idea how much of it was fat, how much was muscle, how much was water, etc. -- that's for longer term analysis. I also have no idea how much of the loss was due to the SesaThin and how much was due to boring my dog to death by practicing my presentation on him (I understand you can really burn up the calories that way). Again, we'll see how things go long term. That's it for week one... onto week two!

Well, my SesaThin review has gone a wee bit off the track these past couple of weeks. Two weeks ago I went to Vegas for five nights, and only took (IIRC) two doses of SesaThin the whole time I was there -- surprisingly, I only gained three pounds, as I was eating anything but clean while I was in Vegas (well, that's not completely true, I did have chinese twice, and ordered brown rice both times). And last week, I not only started Twin Peak's TP-PT training program, but I also switched to a carb cycling diet, so I have no good baseline to work off of and see how the SesaThin is working.

I can say this, it certainly isn't hurting, as I somehow dropped five pounds this past week (I'm sure a lot of that is water weight, but still, thats a lot to lose in one week). I'll keep posting my progress here, but I'm not sure how useful that info's going to be as a review of SesaThin's efficacy.

Not sure if y'all are aware of this, but SesaThin is now available to buy in bulk for very cheap.

You can't beat it with a stick.
