ORIGINAL: Just BB Is the atkins diet bull or not? and what is it about anyways? It's a cutting and muscle preserving diet, not a bulking or strength gaining diet. The carbs you get from it come from lots of green vegs, so it's not a no-carb diet. It's just ultra low carb. If you consume a small amount of carbs before and after your workout and no other time, then it's called a tkd: targeted ketogenic diet. If you take one day a week for a carb up using quality low glycemic carbs, and no other time, then its a ckd: cyclic ketogenic diet. The Atkins Diet, as laid out in the book, is not for bodybuilders or powerlifters. It's for sedentary people or mild exercise. Dr. Atkins did say exercise is a must. Bodybuilders and powerlifters can do very well with a ckd or tkd. Just don't eat too far below maintenance calories.

Minotour gave a good summary. He is right. It is not no carb. Atkins is often misunderstood by many people. I have read the book so many times. You can pick it up in paperback for like $5. You will learn a lot. Many of the same principles that Atkins speaks about are spoken about on this board. It isnt no carbs. He has a "induction period" of 14 days where its 0-20 grams of carbs a day to get you started. Then you slowly start adding carbs till you find what is called your maintanence level of carbs. So it is high protein and limited carbs but after the induction period you could find yourself at a maintance level of 40-80 carbs a day. It just depends on your metabolism.
