Argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Wednesday, April 14, 2004 7:09 PM
I started Guerilla Cardio about 1 1/2 months ago....and about 1 month ago, I pulled my hamstring. Not bad, but on a scale of 1-10....it's about a 6.5. So I waited about a week...and started running again...and what do you know, I pulled it again. So I wait another fuggen weak, this time with no resistance exercise on my hamstrings. Yet still, I pulled it again...not even runnign that hard either. So I then wait TWO WEAKS! So today, I'm running...at a 35%/75% pace, and I PULLED IT AGAIN!!!!

This is really really REALLY frustrating because I'm trying to get fit as soon as possible because in about 1 1/2 months I'm going to have surgery on my knee that's going to put me out of commission for at least 4-6 months...meaning no cardio at all.

So, my question to all of you is.....what kind of cardio would you suggest that isn't invasive on my hamstrings? I can't think of any...lets see...

treadmill - invasive
stairmaster - invasive
bike - somewhat invasive
rowing machine - invasive?

Please help...I'm frustrated as all hell and I feel like punching someone...LOL

firstly, are you warming up and then stretching before all these exercises?
secondly, what do you mean by "pulled" ...just feel that weird hard feeling in leg? cause if its happening this often it maybe something else...should talk to doc... or see physio..

What about one of those elliptical machines where you can adjust the height/incline? I did the full range of incline last time and I noticed there were some levels that hit my hams and quads better than others. The one i was on, even had a little chart to tell you what level to put it at to target certain areas. Just avoid the hamstring levels. Maybe?

That stinks. Hope you can figure something out.

I mean pulled in the same manner you might get that pain when you....well...pull something...I don't know how else to describe it....lets put it this way, when I try to run while I'm in this state, it feels like there's this rod in my hamstring that is being pulled out.....hmm...maybe not a good description. Trust me though, ANYONE who's pulled a hamstring knows what I'm talking about.

As to stretching, yes I do stretch, before and after. Honestly, it's happened 4 times now because I simply haven't given myself enough time to let it heal. I mean think about it....your hamstrings go through a good amount of strain in guerilla cardio...right behind quads and calves. No....I personally don't think a Dr. is necessary...like I said...it's about a 6.5 on a scale of 10...

4 years ago, I pulled my right hamstring (not the same as this one) rounding bases during a game of softball. That was about an 8 on the 10 scale. It literally took about 8 weeks to fully recover. Now it's fine...no problems at all.

I just think I need to stop being soo impatient and wait it out....

Although I'd love to hit the stairmaster, I know it'll prolong the injury as just walking up the flight of stairs (single story) to my apt. flares it up a bit..towards the top of the stairs.

I think I'll just go with the elliptical machine.....that's probably the least invasive method.

Injuries suck...but I'm going to deal with it.....push damn hard with everything else...and look forward to the day I can torture myself with my Guerilla cardio again....

thanks for the imput all...

Ok, here's my 2-1/2 cents. . . . STOP!

I did the same thing with my lower back. Stayed out of the gym and rested three friggin weeks! Became annoyed and ansy so I returned . . . feeling great. Began easy increase weight then . . . POP!! AAACKKK!!! ***Now my back is weaker than before***

You've suffered numerous hamstring pulls and it honestly seems to me that you are either just prone to hamstring injuries (not fully healed? ) or you have a serious muscle imbalance.

Either way you need to heal. Good luck!
