Are you taking Fish Oils/Omega 3? - Thursday, February 05, 2009 9:45 AM ( #1 )
(I posted this under supplements section and didn't get a good response, so I thought I'd post it here)

If you are taking fish oils, how much per day and how often?  Do you go above the daily recommended allowances?

Thanks!

Don't worry about going above the RDA.  Nothing bad will happen (except for slighlty thinner blood).  I get at least 2g of epa/dha a day.

I've actually just finished up the last of my fish oil supps.  I'm not going to buy any more, instead I'm going to buy bags of shelled walnuts.  A quarter cup of shelled walnuts = 90% of the RDA for omega 3's as well as like 210 calories.  It's a great way to get both extra calories and your daily omega-3's.

Funny you mentioned that, I just picked up a bag of walnuts from Trader Joe's yesterday, and when I saw the amount of polyunsaturated fat per serving (14g), I wondered how much was omega 3.  They aren't shelled, but the only ingredient is raw walnuts, so I guess they have the same amount??

Shelled means that the shells have been removed.  Whether the shells have been removed before you get them or not, they are the same.

I use to take fish oil but ran out and just been too lazy to pick up more, don't recall the dosage. I also take vitamin E which also seems to have that blood thinning effect.

Oh, well then they are shelled

BTW, i looked into it, and most of the walnut's omega 3 is ALA, versus fish oil which is EPA/DHA.  Although the latter is considered better omega 3s, I would think it's better to get ALA from food than EPA/DHA from a supplement.

6-8 caps per day. Great quality fish oils as well. It's in my sig.

Fish oils is the most essential supplement in the history of supplements as it benefits every aspect of your health and your fitness goals. Whoever doesn't take them is missing out big time.

One problem with fish oil supplements are that they oxidize fast because they are polyunsaturated.  A lot of the times the carrier oils used in those supplements are already oxidized when added at time of production.  So, essentially you are taking rancid fat supplements, which do a lot more harm than they would do good.

What I was told was to bite one open.  If it's in fact rancid, you will know.  But that's all the advice I got.  I'm guessing rancid oils taste really bad.

ALWAYS keep fish oils and flaxseed oils in the fridge to keep it from going rancid.

There is no real defined RDA for fish oils, because its not an actual nessecity in diet, however they are very beneficial, i wouldnt exactly worry about overdosing on them

There isn't an RDA for fish oils, but I am pretty sure there is an RDA for omega 3s

Didn't know you could get them in anything other than capsules.
So I'll revert back to what I posted:

ALWAYS refrigerate.

True that, but seriously, you will get nothing from benefits from having even 10-20 caps per day.
I've done my research on mega-dosing, that being 40-60 caps per day! The only negative side-effect of having that many in excess is some thinning of the blood. Other than that, people have noticed more radiant skin, less acne, incredibly elevated mood/energy levels, among other things.

So just to clarify, 10 a day will not harm you.

Yes there is a RDA for EFA. With a balanced diet and correct diet you would meet these requirements. There are added benifits from fish oil and flax oul  besides the omegas that is another reason why a lot of people take them.

I have kept my flax and fish out and they don't go rancid. If they were going to go rancid they would have when they were sitting in hot ass weather in trains, trucks and in the stores. I don't loose any sleep over it but if you are worried about it do as wyrms says and fridge em.

EDIT*
Hmm...apparently you are suppose to buy them already refrigerated. I don't think I have seen them that way before they are always just on the normal shelves. Best to do as wyrms says and refrig em. (this is for oils not in capsules, same thing goes for straight flax oil)

Edit#2**
lol so capsules are ok to leave out and will last a few months (prob last longer in fridge but if they are rancid before then this would have no effect). I guess some manufactures put vitamin c into the oil as well which acts as a preservative as an extra step in keeping them fresh. If you are burping fishy burps then the oils you have are probably rancid. Maybe not all of them but some might have been produced incorrectly.

gonna have to disagree here.  Whenever I miss a few doses, or go for some length of time without taking them, I will get those burps.  Whenever I switch brands I get them as well.  Then various other times I will get them mildly.  It really only happens with the potent capsules I have been taking lately (500 dha / 200 epa per 1g fish oil), and I am pretty sure that it is not because they are rancid.

Going with a better brand is always the better choice as well. Because the cheaper it is, usually the lower the quality.
And remember, every cell in your body is made up of what you eat. So would you prefer to have your body reflect a low quality fish oil or would you rather your body be closer to perfection and not have to put up with heavy metals and stuff which the oils have been tested for?

It's also a matter of budget.

I actually go for the cheapest fish oil I can =)

Wyrms, can you guarentee that the more expensive oils you buy are any better than the less expensive ones? =)

Re:Are you taking Fish Oils/Omega 3? - Tuesday, February 10, 2009 12:03 AM ( #26 )
Yep.

Edit: Sigh. I guess I'll elaborate. Don't like leaving things undone. :p

The thing with cheaper brands of fish oils, or any supplements for that matter is the question of quality.
With fish oils the cheaper generic brand crap isn't tested properly and there is no guarantee whether or not it's free from PCBs, Mercury, Dioxins and other general pollutants.

If you want your body to reflect the potential harm to heavy metals, dioxins, etc. and reflect that poison and high level of tolerance to the stuff you're putting into your body by becoming brittle, susceptible to illness, moderate benefits, then by all means do so.
But I prefer to have my fish oils more pure.

Right now I'm in the mid-zone because I'm not that financially secure but when that changes, I'm gonna go for bigger brands. The best thing on the market right now is probably Biotest's Flameout.
