Anybody ever get sweat rashes from the gym? - Sunday, July 12, 2009 7:35 PM ( #1 )
With all the sweat, and heat and friction with your clothing and the immense risk of clogging your sweat pores resulting in infection? I seem to be outbreaking a lot lately, and I know its due to sweating. I usually get this mroe often in the summer, when heat is more intense and im more likely to sweat.

Unfortunately yes. But I did more so when I was fat and had my inner thighs rubbed.

I get it all the time.  I wear a piece of clothing called a rash guard now.  it doesn't prevent heat rash 100% of the time, but it drastically cut down on the frequency of occurrence for me.

They are kind of pricey, but the amount I use them with lifting and MMA makes them well worth the price.

That, and baby powder is worth it's weight in gold to me during the summer months.

Agreed.  This is big for people that get that inner thigh burn.

Tigerfan, I'm not fat but I still get the inner thigh burn when walking very long distances on hot days.  Baby powder is amazing to protect against this.

Yeah rash guard is the only way to go, especially if you are wearing a duck canvas GI. Also check out compression shirts and dont wear boxers and that should take care of some of the rubbing.

I'd also like to add that wearing boxer briefs tends to help reduce heat rash, too.

Really? For me boxers kill me if I am doing a lot of motion, if I am in a 2-3 hour class and have boxers over my jock I will get rashes on my thighs.

A rash guard, also known as rash vest or rashie, is a type of athletic shirt made of spandex and nylon or polyester.

Wow, really? According to all my past dermatologist visits for these damn itching red sweat rashes, they always advise to STAY AWAY from these. They say to only use cotton which allows the skin to breathe, which is why I bought a whole pack of white cotton undershirts the other day. In what way does it protect agaist rash? Sweat rashes are caused by trapped perspiration, and it seems like these fabrics would make it trapped even more.

Well me and King bill wear them because they protect from rashes from canvas gi's and mat burn, the ones I use are made out of some material that pulls the sweat out through the shirt. Like even after a workout wearing a long sleeve rashguard my GI is soaked through.

edit: I just looked they are made of lycra

Along with the rash guard shirts, I also wear compression shorts (also known as rash guard shorts).  The type of material they are and the weave allows them to breathe more and move sweat away from the body, preventing it from getting trapped under the skin and creating heat rash.
