Anybody an expert on this?
-
Wednesday, September 24, 2008 8:13 AM
Hey guys, i kno that this question's probly been answered a million times, but i might be having surgery to fix an abdominal hernia. If i feel well enough can i still go to the gym but keep the weight moderate and work on getting higher reps. So with me not lifting too hard, cutting out a few exercises(squats, deadlifts mainly), and starting cardio again..what else might help me keep what ive work so hard to get? What are your suggestions? thanks

that would NOT be in your best interest. but hey.. go ahead and do the stupid thing.. go lift at the gym, rip your stitches open, and hurt yourself even worse, and have to get another surgery. ^^ that was not me being mean. it's me trying to tell you the truth/seriousness of the matter. REST. that's what you need to do.

i wasnt planning on lifting heavy enough to rip stiches, if i was id be pretty fcuked up. Just sitting on my ass eating for 6 weeks doesn't feel right even tho i kno its better. But thats all your suggesting? Rest? No cardio or light isolation work until i get back in the game?

well.. u did just get CUT open, ur insides were tampered with, and then put back together. even if you THINK that you may not be doing enough to mess something up.. that doesn't mean it can't happen. It's better to be too cautious in this scenario than too aggressive and wind up hurting yourself worse than in the beginning. trust me.. i know the feeling about wanting to do something. i'm very bullheaded myself sometimes. If it were me, I would at LEAST wait 2 full weeks and do NOTHING. See how you feel at that time, and maybe start adding in some VEEEEEERY light cardio.. and if that feels ok for a week, then i would add in some light isolations. Just play it by ear. better safe than sorry... or you may wind up out for another 6 weeks if you rip something

Rest, You might be able to do some cardio after a few weeks, I would wait on the lifting... You underestimate how much your Core muscles, of which your ab's are apart of, actually work. Even when you do the littlest thing, your core is working to stabalize you. I felt the same way when I seperated my shoulder, it sucks but you need to do whats best.

Alright, i kno exactly what your saying. I actually didnt get the surgery yet so that being cut open and tampered with is reeeally easing the tension. lol So, im not doing jack siht for 2 to 3 weeks and if i feel up to it i'll start some light cardio, but nothing with bouncing like running or jumping rope. Then i can always add some light isolation work once its safe to do so. Right?

Like fox said, ease into it. If it hurts... dont do it. lol. If you can, go ahead and go light. **were not doctors, ;) **

i would say don't do a thing, taking a 3-6 week rest isnt going to kill you. Not to mention, your body is already having a tough time repairing damage (aka the hernia and the incision), it will be that much harder for your body to repair itself with the extensive trauma...
