Any suggestions - Thursday, July 03, 2008 6:29 AM
Age:24
Height: 5'11 inches
Weight: 77KG

Ok so been working out for 3 months now, and yes i have noticed a difference in arms chest, shoulders etc. I haven't taken any supplements. I've reached a point where i dont think im getting any bigger and it's really p*ssing me off. Cant lift any heavier wieghts etc. This is my cycle which im probably doing all wrong but:

Day1: Chest and Triceps
Day2: Shoulders and biceps
Day3: Back and abs.
Day4: Rest
Day5: Start the cycle again.

I just want to add more mass to my chest especially. Yes steroids have come into mind but i've resisted so i have just got myself a tub of protien in an attempt to bulk up. Can anyone please give me some advice - Cause i need it big time!

You have to eat more, LOTS more.  Diet and heavy lifting is all it takes to grow.

Thing is im a smoker! which yes i know dont help, but im also one of the people who's screwed in the sense i find so hard to gain weight! I eat a min of three meals a day but squeezing in more meals now in between. Think i just need help on my routine or something. My older brother does bodybuilding but he take droids which i really dont want to take as i already get heart palpitations! it's tempting considering i get the same question everyday "you want me inject you!"

It doesn't matter that you are a smoker.  You can gain weight.  The term "hardgainer" is bulls***.  I thought I was a "hardgainer" too, but you gotta stuff your face.

This is the routine from the book called Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe, which I highly recommend that you check out.  Doing this routine and eating tons of food is like doing steroids, seriously.

It's a 3-day a week, full-body routine:

Workout A:
Squats - 3 x 5
Standing overhead barbell press - 3 x 5
Deadlift - 1 x 5
chin-ups (palms facing towards you) - 2 x as many as you can do
3 sets of any ab exercise

Workout B:
Squats - 3 x 5
Barbell bench press - 3 x 5
Power clean - 1 x 5
Pull-ups (palms facing away from you you) - 2 x as many as you can do
3 sets of any ab exercise

Alternate between workouts A and B, lifting 3 non-consecutive days a week.

That's it, now follow these instructions:

1.) Do not mess with the program.  Do not add or remove any exercises, sets or reps.

2.) Do not mess with the program.

3.) Start out light with all exercises, and add small amounts of weight every single workout.  Make sure that the first time you do this workout, it is not that hard.  Believe me, it will get EXTREMELY HARD, because you will constantly be adding weight every single workout.  Add weight every single workout to every single lift for as long as it is physically possible for you.

4.) Make sure you do warm-up sets for each exercise.  For example if your working weight for squats for the day is 135 lbs., do maybe 3 or 4 warm-ups sets (1 set with the bar, 1 set with 65 lbs., 1 set with 105 lbs.  This is known as "ramping warm-up sets".)  then do the working sets.  When the weight gets heavy, warm-up sets are crucial for your protection.

5.) Eat lots of good food, drink lots of milk, and get lots of rest.

6.) Do not mess with the program.

Oh, and the squats are the most important part of the program.  Make sure that you do FULL squats.  That means BELOW PARALLEL.  The book that I suggested will give you an excellent explanation of how exactly to do full squats.

Wow, you don't know what squats are???  You are DEFINATELY not even near the level of experience where you should even think about doing steroids.  Please buy that book.  Here's a link to where you can get it: http://startingstrength.com/  It's about $30, but well worth it.

Whey protien is one of the most useful supplements you can take IMHO, but it is not the magic answer that will get you big and ripped.  You have to have your diet in check, and you have to have a solid routine, and you have to stick with it for a long time.  The real results will start to show after months of solid training and dieting.

F*** steroids, learn to squat!

brihead... look at his routine!!  i can't believe you missed this,  but the poor guys isn't training his legs at all.

you MUST train your legs.  get your foundation strong, and you WILL grow.... provided you eat eat EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT!

I think i've made my point.  diet is very important, and is part of the large majority that determines whether you will get bigger or not.

You know few people have said that to me DO YOUR LEGS!!
The only reason i didnt do any leg work is cause i worked out with my brother at first he's been doing this for about 4 years and benches about 150-160KG and he never does his legs!

Obviously im not him and have a different body. lol i guess i just have to stuff myself! which i'll struggle to do but HAVE TO.

Another thing, does smoking weed screw with diet and workout?

Than your brother is NOT a body builder.  True strength doesn't come from laying on your back.  Its standing!  Squat and Deadlift!!  don't take steroids.  Squat heavy and Eat big!
No the leg press is not the same as doing squats.

There is no "leg day" in the routine I mentioned.  It's full body every workout.

The weed question was silly.  I smoke all the time, and I do just fine.  Worry about your diet and training.

I'm gona give your workout a go today and see how i get along. How long would you say a good gym workout is, im there for roughly an hour every time.

As for the silly question i asked, it's actually helped me clarify that it doesn't affect my routine as i was gona give it up

give his routine at least 3 weeks but really a couple of months.  You lift smart like that and eat right and you will be stronger than your brother with out the roids.
