Amounts of Protein - Monday, September 28, 2009 11:32 PM ( #1 )
One of my buddys was telling me that your body can only absorb 30 grams of protein an hour, and anything else is just gonna be wasted and turned to fat. Anybody know if there is any truth to this?

50-60 is more accurate, of course depends on the size of the individual but 50 is a good number to eat by.

Depends on the type of protein, as well as activities done before consuming it, and your body size.

seriously.  Its been shown recently to be around 20 grams when egg protein, the most bio-available protein besides whey was tested.  Maybe a little bit higher for heavier guys but not much.

One study saying it's 20 grams means nothing. I'm going off the general consensus that numerous studies have shown. But in all honesty with studies varying so wildly in results, an accurate and pinpoint amount is impossible. Still, it's better to consume more than needed than not enough, so if the correct amount were 30-40 then I'd still shoot for over 40 rather than under 30.

It doesn't really matter how much you can absorb, it is how much you can actually utilize before it is stored as glycogen or fat.

the study i posted about 20 grams per meal doesnt say 20 grams is what you have to eat it basically says the anabolic effect and protein synthesis level was shown to be no higher at 40 grams, so in theory eating 40 grams is fine but from the results there will be no additional benefit.

i totally agree with what others on here have said, individual differences play a huge role and just because one study says 20 grams doesn't make it true for everyone.

IMO 40 grams of protein per meal is optimal.

Well look at some of the biggest strongest powerlifters, a lot of those guys eat just 3 meals a day.  40g a meal taht is 120 g of protein, I guarantee they need and utlize a lot more than that.  Not saying that is typical of all of them, cause many of them eat all day long, but many of them just eat large quantities and spread them out to slow the metabolism to be able to build muscle, sounds odd I know.

considering the best way to get protein would be to have gram by gram slowly comin in all day...why would you want to put a bunch of grams in at once anyway other than convenience.  Obviously the more broken up and smaller amounts of protein you get the better.

I'm not sure of the amount, but studies say that the body can only absorb so much of each nutrient in one meal. and then the rest passes thru. I don't know about adaptation or anything else, though - you may want to ask a specialist if you're not sure.
