As far as when I'm hitting the gym this time around, I'm not being as anal about preciseness as I was in the past.  My mentality now is "If I'm on a regular lifting regimen that can wear me out in an hour, and I'm eating 90% clean to gain about 1lb.-1.5lbs. a week, I'm golden."

Could this come back to bite me in the ass?  I mean, honestly, I've met so many guys who are muscular who aren't obsessive or even educated at all in fitness. Sure, most people are, and then some of the guys who aren't but are still muscular are freaks of nature.  But there's probably something to it.

I don't know why my mentality has changed.  I suppose in the past I ended up getting burnt out too easily.  I mean, I was measuring every serving of food I ate in a day, spending half my day in food prep.  Then I'd find myself rushing to the gym because "Man I just ate an hour ago, now's the peak time to go" or something to that effect.

I guess my question is, how strict must someone be to achieve success at a beginner's level?  Given that I'm 22 and my body is still relatively responsive to training (I would think) and my body type is probably close to mesomorph, although my hips are kind of wide, I'd guess that it's going to be like a writing something on a clean slate, or like learning as a child.  You've got the most room to improve so anything is considered an achievement.

I do understand that later on things become more difficult, and every 1% under 10% BF is probably 10x harder to lose than anything up to 10%.  So again, my question is, how strict must a beginner be, in both monitoring diet and exercise, to attain positive results - note positive results, not 100% ideal results, just something to be happy with.

I'll piggyback on that as well and get more specific.  Is my thinking horribly wrong that as long as I eat (95% healthy) to gain about 1-1.5lb weekly and lift pretty hard for 1 hour 3x a week I'll attain pretty good results?

I just felt the need to ask because, although I LOVE this forum, with all my heart, honestly, I still do find that sometimes advice is given and backed up with so much scientific evidence, to the credit of the extremely knowledgable posters here, that it seems like it's more suited towards professional, competetive bodybuilders.  As a beginner, this can be intimidating, and a daunting task.  I want a muscular physique and strong physical ability.  I'm too involved in other hobbies, as well as working my way up the ladder in the workplace, to be trying to train like a professional bodybuilder.  So I asked this to see how loose I can get when trying to adapt some of the advice in here to suit my needs.

Just don't get me wrong.  I take physical health very seriously, and have been tenacious in sticking with it through many past failures.  I also assign a good amount of time from my week for the various aspects of preparation, reading, eating, and training, but obviously not nearly as much as a professional - or someone who has it as their one and only hobby outside of the workplace.

Hope this doesn't offend anyone, as that is not the intent.  Also, I don't blame anyone if they don't read the whole thing.  Some of you who remember me from when I posted regularly in the past might recall my bombastic posts and wordy, stream-of-consciousness writing style Smile.  I'll bold out the actual questions from this.

your mentality is not too lax at all. it depends on what you want, which you seem to know what you want: a hobby/health over being a competing/professional bodybuilder.  youre well informed on the foundations/key ideas and you adhere to them realistically.  thats good, stick with it. dont let overthinking everything bog you down.  body building is about making yourself better, not driving you crazy for some image that you think you should be.

theres absolutely nothing off about your mentality of working out with good nutrition in order to gain some muscle. for a beginner, or starting up again in your case, you'll see plenty of gains without going 100% gung ho into every tiny aspect of everything. keep in mind too, all the scientific stuff backing ideas is really focused on maximizing possible gains...maximizing, not that if you dont adhere to eating precisely this or that at exactly this time, it will cancel out what youve been working for.

dont get me wrong, its important to know about what youre doing, and you do. dont let everything get to you tho, just do what youre doing, since it sounds good, and roll with it. enjoy working out and being healthy.

Right on Edrice.  That's the word that was escaping me as I wrote that.  Most advice you see gives maximum results, and that's great.  I just needed to hear someone say that it's possible to get good results without agonizing over every detail.

To me, just as important as being knowledgable in the areas of health & fitness is to have a "Big Picture" plan of attack.  Certainly learn what the absolute critical things to do are, then learn about the ways to maximize results, add them together with what works for you, and give it a shot.  I'll certainly be willing to tighten up some loose ends as time goes on by monitoring my weight gains vs. BF% changes, as well as strength gains and just my overall appearance.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.
