After surgery - Saturday, January 13, 2007 11:25 AM ( #1 )
Hey all, I was curious about something. I need to have minor surgery soon and therefore am not allowed to exercise at all for about 3 weeks afterwards! What i'm wondering is if in that time, do muscles shrink significantly? Also, is it easier to store fat during the time? I currently have a lean physique (about 10% bodyfat) and a pretty good amount of muscle and I don't really want to lose much of that... So is there anything I can do during those weeks to maintain the muscle? Any dietary advice? And DO muscles even shrink that much in that short of a time? Thanks for the help!

They will shrink, but you can use it as a cutting stage.  To prevent your muscles from shrinking to much, eat alot of casein protein, especially before bed.  Best source is cottage cheese, but milk is pretty good too.  I don'y know what kind of surgery you are having, but if it allows you to walk around and things like that, take advantage of it to keep your body moving as much as possible.  Even if all you can do is squeeze a tennis ball, do it.

usually atrophy kicks in at 2 weeks.
