Hey, Im new to the forum. I had a question, what is a better alternative for bench press, weighted push ups or db floor bench presses? I know there is no subbing for BP, but what is the better alternative for building muscle in the chest? The problems Im facing is, I know push ups add strength and endurance, but I thought if adding a weight vest( 75 lb weight vest ) and slowly increasing the weight might add muscle, not sure. Secondly, with db floor presses, your elbows hit the floor, thus limiting full range of motion. However, the db press is a free weight movement. What do you think is better... ---A side note- - I use to lift and do BP,deads, SDLs,ect. However, had abb surgery( tore them )....I also have limited space to lift, college now! So a smith machine is out, and I have no spotter to hand me the dbs( on a bench ). Thanks Report Post

it would be a good idea to do them both imo. dont really know if one is better than the other, but if i had to guess i would say weight push ups are the better exercise

For general chest development, the weighted pushups would be better. If you are trying to increase your bench and explode through a mid to low sticking point then the DB floor press would be ideal. They just don't have the ROM to develop the chest like a full range motion would do.

I agree that the push ups might be better. However, would you gain muscle with floor presses as well if you suqeezed( contracted ) your muscles at the top of the lift, when your hands are in the air( almost like when you do pec flyes ). Thanks for the replies. Im interested in what you all think. My limited workout was going to be like this( remember I dont have a bunch of stuff ) Dbs would be done with power blocks: Day 1 Weighted push ups/ or db floor press dips db french curls Day 2 Bent over rows Upright rows Bicep curls/ and hammers for variation Day 3 - Okay this get tricky cause I got Dbs Squats ---maybe lunges...lol with power blocks or sumo squat.

why cant you do bench press?? Have you looked into a power rack??? Its prob the best piece of gym equipment you can buy ... and unlike the smith, its free weights. The best thing about it, is that it has self spotters so its safe for you to use. http://www.bodysolid.co...p;SearchFor=&PT_ID=0
