Abs!!!! What to do
-
Sunday, July 23, 2006 10:28 AM
I am back and i have another potentially stupid questions......how often should you work out your abs.......how many different workouts.......how many reps............I am getting my bf% lower and lower and from everything i read it says about 10 percent is when you can see them, but there is one thing i do not want, and one thing i do. I do not want the "im soo skinny that my abs just show" abs.....you know the ones that look like a very slight ripple across water, but along the other end of the spectrum i do not want huge abs like the ones you would see Ronnie or Jay have....the ones where they have ok looking abs but their midsection is thick....im going for the middle of that, not to skinny not to thick, so given that info how many reps should i do and which exercises

Your diet is key to your goals. If you want abs that are nice and developed, but not monster abs, it's all about adding some muscle and then lowering your bodyfat to show the muscle off. If you're not eating to gain monster abs, you won't get them. However, if you're not eating to gain the kind of abs you DO want, you won't get them either. If you work the abs with weight, they'll respond like any other muscle. One of my favorite ab exercises is kneeling cable crunches. Add in some weighted decline crunches, hanging knee/leg raises with weights, and there you go. Three sets of each, 8-10 reps per set, once or twice a week, and your abs will respond- Provided, as I said, you're putting the right amounts of the right foods into your system. Abs, more than most other areas, are definitely affected more by your diet because the body tends to store the last bit of fat there. While your arm/chest/leg work will show through at higher bodyfat levels, being able to see the results in your abs takes strict attention to your diet more than your ab routine.

I have one more thing cpl.....I think my diet is good.....it doesnt have an extremly high amount of calories because i am on a sort of cut down and bulk up cycle...i know that is not a good way to do it, but as of right now i do not have to money to support an increased food bill and will not have it for another month. But I'm losing fat and gaining a little muscle....not a real good ratio i think 1:5 (1 being muscle gain and 5 being fat loss obviously) but back to the question.....i have done kneeling cable crunches in the past, but i am currently at a fitness center at my apartment that does not have this....is there another exercise i could sub for that one? thanks for any help.

if you want pretty toned up abs you need to give your body fuel and s*** loads of food to build that muscle, abs take a pretty strict diet to earn and can mostly a change in your lifestyle for some people, like cpl said its more to do with your diet than ab routine, as i learnt...eventually - PWG

Sure- There are tons of ab exercises out there, that just happens to be my favorite. Perhaps some decline reverse crunches.

Thanks for the quick responses. I will work on the workouts you suggested and i will try to get my diet in check. I guess i am going to try to cut down to 10 percent and then bulk up and then cut down again. I figured my journey to a 6 pack would be a bumpy ride, i just hope that there is a little light at the end of this tunnel ;)

Nope. That myth is known as spot reducing, and it's simply not how the body works. The body stores fat as a fuel source, and the stomach happens to be the last place most men will burn fat from- You can't burn fat from one area by working out that area- Working the area will only work the muscles there. To get rid of your gut, you have to lower your bodyfat percentage to the point where your body will be forced to get rid of that last bit covering your abs.
