About to contadict myself - Tuesday, August 18, 2009 8:28 PM ( #1 )
Hey, well i'll start with a bit about my build. I weight around 163 (up from 140 last year around this time) and i'm 5"9' I workout regularly using the 3 day full body workout. So i bench squat deadlift overhead press dips pull ups... All those good compound movements, and i really like it. I've pretty much stalled at 163  since January. I still wanna gain more weight (goal is to be about 175 solid) .....but i want it lean weight. When i was 140 i had virtually no body fat abs rippling but my pecs and bis and legs were pathetic. Now i've got a bit of size (still not much lol) but i'm convered in this layer of disgusting baby fat (or excess skin, whatever you wanna call it).... Now i'm not sure exactly what i'm asking all of you internet people, i just want this extra skin off me and more muscle. Oh ya i'm getting a bit of a belly too and i want that GONE. Should i switch up my routine? change my nutrition somehow? Right now i try to eat pretty healthy and try to eat as much as i can... Any comments are appreciated, even dumb ones lol

That is indeed a funny post ... but also it serves to prove a point. So ur saying to eat like crazy get chubby while lifting big weight, then to cut by diminishing calories... I've been trying to bulk for the past few months by eating like crazy. (I guess my crazy isnt crazy enough) I can only bulk to 170, and at 170lbs and only 5'9 i look a little pudgy. I dont want to cut back down, because i know i can easily make it to 155, but then i'll look super skinny. WTF. I eat about 7 meals a day, not sure on the calorie count, but today while eating oatmel i almost gagged by trying to force feed it down my throat.

Very few people find the sweet spot where they can continiously gain mucle mass without significat fat gains... I would suggest that you need to really think about what your goals are and what you're willing to do to get there..

If you're like most, it's going to be nearly impossible to bulk, regarless of how clean without adding some fat.  keep in mind that the more muscle you add, the easier that fat will burn off when you decide to cut. 

If you're concerned about getting pudgy, then I seriously doubt you're going to see the rusults you're looking for.. getting pudgy is just part of it for most of us..

I hate when people tell me they want to gain muscle but when I tell them it's in the nutrition and they respond with "I don't want to get fat".

Damn, I knew it, America's problem isn't video games and MySpace. It's the fruits, veggies, rice, healthy meat, water and exercise we do! That's what makes us fat!

I have the whole world figured out now.

I guess thats why bulking is usually left to the winter time so that you can keep extra warm in the colder months. My goals are still to gain weight so i guess i'll just continue to eat a lot, and lift heavy.  Thx for all who posted !

Just try to keep a close eye on how you look.. don't necessarily go by the scale but the mirror.. as long as you don't get up over 18% you'll be fine.. besides, like I said earlier.. once you do gain some solid muscle mass, the fat seems to melt off faster due to your metabolism speeding up.. goodluck

Just make sure your foods are clean and try to know the calories and macros you get each day. Once you establish a routine of foods, it will be easier. Many folks on here also point out to lift heavy or intense in the 5 to 10 rep range, what ever works for you. May need to hold your calorie intake where it is and add some HIIT 2 times a week and see if that helps. Are you adding intensity or weight to the lifts each workout? If your using the same weight and reps that you were using a month ago, then you need to up the weight or intensity. make it change. Create a reason for the muscle to need to develop more. May need to change up your macros.

Yea i always try to add weight every week to most if not all my lifts. They increased alot then i noticed a plateau. Once i stalled on most my lifts i started using the texas training method and it brought up some of my more important lifts ups. Actualy just today i went to do 225 on the bench press (i thought was my max) for 3 sets at 3 reps each .... I hammered out 3 set of 8 and 1 set of 6 .... I guess it's time to increase that lift. Weighing only 165 i think 225lbs on the bench is a pretty good number, but i can always do more .... A strange thing about me tho is that, my deadlifts and squats are at the same weight as my bench, i find when i do those two workouts with really good form my knees bother me. Arent those two excercises uspposed to be much higher than my bench weight.

Deads and squats are weak for me as well. Keep working them though. Thats what Im doing. My chest seems to stand out a little too much compared to other areas, so I am tending to not hit that as hard. When I think about it, I can really put some intensity into a chest workout, more so than other lifts, so Im trying to feel more intensity in the other lifts.

As far as adding BF, I have a hard time with that as well. However, I have read on several boards from lots of folks that even though its possible to bulk and cut BF or not gain BF can be done, it takes much much longer for those results, and the diet has to be spot on. That means the macros that work for you need to be dialed in. That will take a lot of trial and error and nutritional knowledge to find out which macros are best suited for you. I dont have that level of knowledge, so like most, I will clean bulk, accept some pudge along with the muscle gain, then cut. Many have said that is the best way they have made their gains, so Im going to go with that.

Find a way to make a squat rack. Make one out of wood if you have to. Make one out of pipes bolted to the outside of the house and sitting or bolted to plywood or something in an upside down L if needed. Dont do like I did and skip deads and squats. That has hurt my progress a lot over the years.

You are 5 inches, 9 feet tall? damn.

I think you should switch ya routine up and Go harder. If you eat good nutritional valued foods like Steaks, Chickens, Tuna's, your greens/veggies, fruits and dairy's I would be dumbfounded as to why you are not getting bigger. GO harder and EAT better.

Simple as that.
