I just got a membership to the gym and went there for the first time ever today.  I have always been very skinny, and my goal is to gain some weight.  At my frist day I felt embarrased because I was probably using the machines wrong, I couldn't do to many sets, and I was walking around in one big circle the entire time.  After I got done working out I felt dissy, nauseous, and I had a bit of a head ache.  The only thing I wanted to do was sleep.
I don't think I had a very good first day.  I'm confused about alot of things, what to eat, how I should lift, how to gain weight, and the nausia and other feelings I have been having.

Start simple mate.

3 sets of 15-20 reps of a weight you can manage on

Leg press machine
Chest press machine
Lat pull down machine
Leg cuyrl machine
Crunches

You work your whole body in this program

You felt sick and dizzy due to not working out before. This will pass in a few workouts get through it you'll be fine ur just not used to it.

as for eating. Just eat healthy. Lean meat, good whole grain carbs, fruit and vegies.

Do that workout three times a week for four weeks then ask me for another.

Eat well for 3mths then think about sups if ur not gaining.
Measure ur progress in weeks and months not days.

If you're feeling dizzy and nauseous it'll be one of two likely causes:
A. You didn't eat a small meal half an hour to an hour before your workout.
B. You were nervous when doing the exercise and forgot to breath.

ohhh the first time i went to the gym, haha very nerve racking moment especially when people are in there, but despite stereotype makers, most people that join gyms are very helpful, ive had guys give me tips and stuff and was very appreciative of it, like tatch said, just focus on the easy stuff, and gradually start a new machine and exercise each time you go there, despite your size and experience, i would rather see a beginner in a gym doing something wrong-than a big guy in the gym doing something wrong, which i see a lot, i hate seeing big guys deadlift sometimes, the way there spine bends and there faces go red....I just fear im gonna hear a shrill scream and a CRACK where there back breaks *shudder*.

just focus on form etc, look up the exercises on google and you should be able to find animated scenes of how theyre done, while this may sound annoying, its difficult to explain an exercise usually, unless its something simple like bench or an arm curl of some form

  1. Sign up for the Beginning Bodybuilding Weekly newsletter (you'll also get the Top 12 Report which will help you with the calorie thing)
  2. Watch the thread I'm doing about The Truth About Building Muscle.  The author of that book was in a similar position and hence, decided to share his experiences.
  3. Nutrition forum!  You should be there a lot reading the top posts
  4. Get familar with the equipment and read up on the exercises BEFORE doing any workouts so you know what you are doing before you get started

Stick around on DB.  There's a lot of good information and a lot of very friendly and experience people.

Yeah you shouldn't feel embarsased.  I mean everyone you see working out started just like you and probably made the same mistakes.  If you felt nausias mayabe you were nervous and mayabe you were dehydrated or something.
