ACE inhibitors/angiotensin blockers - Tuesday, March 17, 2009 9:49 AM ( #1 )
I have had high blood pressure for a while. If I took ECA, it would be around 180/120. Even when I took no stimulants, and wasn't particularly stressed, it was still 140/90 at best. I worked out religiously , didn't drink much, didn't take drugs, got lots of sleep, and overall was very healthy, except my BP. I finally decided to bite the bullet and go to the doc and get some BP meds.
The first time I saw high BP, I was about 25, and now, at 35, and with a family, I reluctantly decided to take meds, probably for the rest of my life. The doc prescribed a Angiotensin II blocker. Angiotensin constricts vessels, and lowers BP. ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitors block the enzyme that converts inactive angiotensin I to active angiotensin II. Angiotensin blockers lock to the angiotensin site and prevent it from takng action. Since I've been taking it, only a couple of weeks now, I've put on over 10 lbs, and don't look fatter or like I'm retaining water. I've still been eating pretty well, and working out on a regular, including cardio. My theory is that it dialates the blood vessels and allows more blood and nutrients into the muscle, kind of like the various NO boosting products, or like Cialis/Viagra, which many bodybuilders and powerlifters swear by.
I'm wondering if anybody has had or heard of similar experiences, or seen any studies to this effect?

When I first started BP meds I had some problems with fatigue. It could be that your activity level is down a bit.

If you have had high uncontrolled BP for years you might want to ask your doctor about checking to see if there has been any damage, particularly Aneurysm.
