-
Tuesday, April 11, 2006 4:12 PM
I am 14 years old, 5"10 and 145 lbs. I play AAA hockey and wanted to become stronger in order to improve my game. At home i only have dumb bells. Any suggestions of what i can do or what i can take in order to get bigger and stronger? I am in good shape now, but i want to become ripped, so that i my overall strength is better. HELP PLEASE

try holding the dumbbell and do lunges to the side.. you'll be pushin like you would push off when you skate also, rest your stick on your back like you would with the squat bar. twist slowly and as far as you can to the left then to the right. i did this for about 5 minutes every other day for a month between the end of one season and tryouts for the next season and my shot was a lot better. thats the only hockey related things i can think of off the top of my head. i'll be doing them both for the next few months before tryouts here at school along with my normal lifting routine. good luck

i just read your other post. to get more explosive power out of the legs, do a few sets of squat jumps (just squat down and jump as high as possible- don't pause inbetween reps). you can also try box jumps. set up a platform about 2 feet high and jump up and land on it. we did things like this for football and it helped me a lot with hockey. as far as abs go, i would hold a weight on your chest and do crunches. also the twists i said above. then you can also do your basic curls andd triceps extensions with the DB's. pushups are good too.

How much weight should i use and how many reps. I have used 10lbs dumb bells before, and 5 sets of 15, but i havent seen effective results. Now im trying 15lbs. Please give me some advice on how many sets/reps i should be doing. Also, when i do crunches, i use this simple machine that i rest my hands on, so that it smoothens the movement, because if i dont use the machine i feel more strain on my thighs than i do on my abs. Am i wasting my time doing this? Must i use weights when doing crunches? Any advice Boomer05? Thank You

its up to you on how much weight you use. if you're doing 10 reps easily i would up the weight. read around the forums for the exact number of reps-danmirage has posted it plenty of times. i think its like 6-8 reps for strength-and thats 6-8 reps where the last rep or two are tough. When i do the side lunges, i usually use a 35-40 pound dumbell but that is after a full leg workout. regualr lunges would be good for strengthening your legs as well. as far as weighted crunches. people have said it before- your abs are just like any other muscle- use weight to make them stronger. strong abs will help with everything. also, i would try a google search of some workouts to help. its hard to get good strength if you only have some dumbells. the exercises i said were only a couple things i did along with some squats and leg presses.

for hockey there are alot of exercises you need to do. for the serious hockey player you should be doin a lot of wall sits squating wrist exersices close grip bench for your triceps (for ur shot) leg press lunges i dont like wasting my time w/ running because all the years i have been playing i used to run alot before the season and when it came time to the first practice i would still be out of shape. also everyday a good hockey player works on his shot. after school or work you should be shooting close to 300 pucks a day. and 900 pucks ont he weekends. and for that chizzled stomach everyone wants, who gives a s*** you want more mass regardless of you position. *just in fyi any questions or comments let me know
