A BULK GONE WRONG - Thursday, April 12, 2007 4:34 AM ( #1 )
I have been lifting for about a month now and I hit one muscle group 5 times a week (Mon-Legs, Tue- Chest, Wed-Back, Thurs-OFF, Fri-Shoulders, Sat-Arms.)  with the goal of Bulking.  I have figured out my maintenance calories and with the goal of Bulking, I need approximately 4,000-4,400 calories per day according to the two different formulas I used.  I eat about 7-8 times a day with proportions of 50% Carbs, 30% Protein and 20% Fat according to FitDay.   I am about 240 pounds, mid 30’s, and 25% Body Fat.

I basically went from approximately 2,000 calories to the 4,000 calories overnight.  I did not slowly increase the calories over several weeks like I am reading that you are supposed to.  In the month I have been doing this, I have gained about 10 pounds.  It obvious that my stomach is bigger so not really sure if I had any muscle built although I am significantly stronger than I was 4 weeks ago.   My question is based on my 25% BF and doubling the calories overnight which I know I shouldn’t have done, should I now go on a cut to lose the bodyfat?  If so, what is the best way to do that?  Do I keep the same weight training schedule and start to incorporate cardio into the routine as well as slowly (maybe 250 cal/week??) decreasing the calories?

All replies, comments, criticisms are really appreciated.

THANK YOU FOR CONTRIBUTING TO MY SUCCESS!!

Yeah I'd say what a lot of people would say, go on a cut.

For starters, down your intake from 4000 to whatever your maintenance level may be (I think it was 14 x bodyweight in lbs = Maintenance Intake)
Read this for nutrition details, it's long but worth it:

If you're still confused a bit then PM Dan.

Post your whole routine and we'll probably check it for any faults or anything that may come between you and fat loss.
Definitely begin to incorporate cardio, start with like 3x30 minute jogs a week, then week by week progress it a bit, by say, adding 5-10 minutes to the jogs and then eventually add another 30 minute jog or something.
Progressions help.

I also think that you need to vary rep ranges, start the first set at 12-15 (to keep lactate flowing as it'll burn more fat and require more energy) and do the end set at 6-8 reps (To maintain muscle mass, your body needs a good reason to not burn off muscle mass, that's why you gotta strain the muscle as well).

hmmm......could be the foods you intake, peek at my journal in the journal section, its the fitness figure 2007 one, I am on 4k cal per day right now, and I am 130 lb, 5'3" and still have a shadow of a 6 pack, and I increased my cals without progression too..........
There is a gap here somewhere that we are missing.

Linda, you can't compare your calorie intake with others. As you have already said, your competitive fitness training is very intense, and I'm sure you do much more volume that the general bodybuilders here, even if they are working out 5x a week. Then we have alot of other factors to factor in, genetics, training history, etc....

Not comparing, guess just trying to make a point - not to say he/she should do what I do, just saying IMO it seems there is another missing link outside of cals, I think its food choices.

Of course. Diet would've definitely played a part in the weight gain. I'm sure if he ate those 4000 cleaner, he'd be at least a bit leaner.

Well personally I believe it was the dramatic increase of calories. If his metabolism is slow and used to eating less, and then it is increased dramatically, then he will experienced definitely a weight gain. It's not like he can double his calorie intake and not gain a whole heap of fat. It's like Linda if you decreased your intake by half, you're going get the same side effects, but in reverse.
