3rd Metatarsal

I think I fractured the 3 metatarsal in my right foot. I can't walk on it unless I have shoes on. Soon as I don't have an arch support I get bad pain and a little swelling in the fore foot (or about 2 inches down from my toe tips on the bottom of my foot.) What you think Doc Lynx?

What do i think? I think that if it hurts to walk on, then you shouldnt walk on it! You couldnt have just spontaneously fractured your foot - Was there an incident where you hurt your foot recently? The only way to tell for sure if a bone is broken is X-ray. if there is a pain, swelling/bruising, reduced range of movement/function then go see your doctor and get it scanned. Its the only way to be 100% sure (well, almost 100%) if your bone is broken. Until then:Rest, Ice and Compression (usually with a bandage)

Thats what my gym teatcher said it was. Cause its been hurting my for years but got worse. He said it probably healed wrong when I cracked it cause it's common in running sports and weightlifting could have cause more notcie to it. Just wanted to see what you thought about it.

Your gym teacher makes a lotta sense Dook. Its very much like a 'shin splint' phenomenon but in the foot. Stress fractures, especially if they happen over and over again, can cause pain and recurrent hairline fractures over the long run. If this is a chronic injury, then you might be best suited to following preventative measures such as appropriate shoes with adequate padding and proper alignment etc An X-ray will give you a definite idea of whats happening with your bones. But do you really need one? If this has been an on-going problem, then id say probably not. Just take all the precautionary measures to stop it from happening again. If you are very active on your feet (e.g. athletics etc) then you might consider seeing a podiatrist who will offer you better advice than a doctor about your condition.
