2+ hours of cardio per day for sport, will HST training help? - Thursday, November 20, 2008 7:04 AM ( #1 )
Currently I row at a Varsity Unversity level as a lightweight rower (under 160 lbs). In training we row a minimum 2 hours per day on the indoor rowing machine or on the water (this is prodominately at lactic threshold, not all out pace). I have done weights before I started rowing, and really like the concept of HST training.

Do you guys think that HST training will still be effective and help with overal strength even if I do 2+ hours of cardio per day? From what I understand HST works by maximizing rest and building strength with Hypertrophy... in reality I would not be giving much rest...

What form of training do you guys think would be most benifitial? Ideally I would like to build strength and VO2 max, I don't care about looking pretty or bulk.

Thanks for any help!

You won't gain any bulk or much strength when you row 2 hours a day.

Do you get any rest days?

about 4 months ago i was doing about that much cardio in one day.  in the morning i would run about 5/6 miles in the morning on treadmill and in the afternoon i would have a pretty intense lifting routine and then after lifting would run another 5/6 miles on the treadmill.  when i started the running, i like to run btw, my strength began to decrease and i was losing weight.  the thing with that though is that is what my main goal was.  to lose some weight and gain muscle endurance.    i was burning about 2000 calories a day from doing cardio.  im sure thats about how many or even more you are burning as well.  its really going to be hard to build strength and size.

i remember when i was in highschool wrestling before the season started the coach had us lifting during football season to gain strength and size all while knowing when the season started we would lose weight and some strength to build muscle endurance to last those six minute from hell matches.

We typically rest on sundays... Like I said though, the majority of the rowing is done at such a pace that it doesn't kill us, it simply works on muscle memory and building an aerobic base. I have noticed a huge strength increase in the last 2 years as I have gotten a lot faster.

I am just trying to find a weight training program that will make me stronger and faster.
