Hi everyone, i'm new on to the forum and i'm sorry if there are other threads like this one. I need help putting on weight. I can eat all day and not put on any noticeable weight.  I'm about 5'8 and weigh about 152 pounds. I'm too scawny for my liking, its like i've never even been through puberty, my body just doesn't look like its developed. Soccer pre season starts in a few months so its hard trying to put on weight when i just burn it off during training. I just wanna put on weight and then get some muscle out of it.

So here are my question -

  1. What are some foods that i need to be eating. I know foods with protein and carbs is what i have to eat but what foods contain them?

  2. I know i can't eat 6 times a day, not that theres enough food in my house to eat that much anyway, so what supplements should i take?

  3. i've sort of been working out with 4kg dumbells the last week but they're pretty pathetic. i'm gonna buy new ones but i wanna know what weight should i buy?

Thats all i can think of for now but if anyone has any advice for me it will be appreciated. Thanks

Foods to be eating...chicken, tuna, eggs, peanut butter, nuts, cottage cheese, turkey, brown rice, kindey beans, vegetables, fruits, oats and low fat milk. Thats a few for ya. As for supplements I would go with whey protien. Good size dumbells would be like 20-25 Lbs. Before you buy them try and curl them, get ones you can only curl 5 times would be perfect.

As a general rule protein is contained in meats and fish (with some vegetable exceptions such as mushrooms) and carbs are highest in grains such as oats/muesli, rice, pasta. The good news is that most grain based foods are dirt cheap - grab yourself some muesli (only a couple of dollars for a large bag) and have a few small serves throughout the day.

Now FlyKick, don't be harshing the veggies, LOL. A good mass-building meal plan must be balanced Smile

Good protein sources: Beans, chick peas, lentils, tofu, nuts & seeds, LEAN meats (chicken breast, turkey, etc.), tuna (preferably albacore or chunk white variety) and other white fin fish (tilapia, flounder, cod, orange roughy, etc.), egg whites, and dairy products (milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.).

Good complex carb sources: Like FlyKick said, oats, musli, rice, pasta, don't forget potatoes, quinoa (pronounced "keen-wah"), and cereals.

Good fats: olive oil, flax seed oil, fish oils (cod liver, salmon, etc.) Steer clear of trans-saturated garbage like butter "alternative" spreads and mystery foods like Margarine.

As for volume, don't try to replace more than one meal a day with supplements. The majority of your calories have to come from whole foods -digestion is a metabolically-intensive activity, and I've come to learn that the more my body is preoccupied digesting food, the less time it spends tearing down what I've built. Definitely use a protein supplement post-workout, and get yourself on creatine if you're looking for size increases. Other than that, my idea of a meal replacement is usually some kind of fruit, a few slices of whole grain bread, and an energy bar of some kind (I've been hitting Clif brand "Builder's" bars lately -20g of protein and a truckload of carbs).

My first equipment was a set of star-lock dumbbell handles that took standard plates. They're cheap, and you can buy plates as you need them and your budget permits. Or, if you can throw down a couple of Bens, most sporting goods stores (Dick's, Modell's, etc.) have decent starter 300 Lb Olympic barbell sets for $150 or less. When you consider that most places charge 50-60 cents per pound for loose plates, that's like getting the bar for nothing -definitely worth it Smile

You and I are in the same boat when it comes to gaining -gotta fight for every ounce. But if you are persistent and tenacious, you can do it!

Thanks heaps for all the advice guys. Now i've got lots of ideas on what foods to eat. Regarding the supplements, can i take both the whey protein and creatine? I was a bit hesitant on taking supplements but i might give it a go.

Absolutely!  I usually blend my creatine right in with the post-workout protein shake, and slam that with some kind of simple carbs, like a banana.  The first half-hour to one hour after a workout is super-critical for getting the best, most easily-degested nutrients into your muscles; it's when they're screaming for them the most Smile

Heres some pointers from one n00b on supp. to the next...

I take No Xplode, so i'll eat about 2-3 hours BEFORE i workout because no xplode works best with an "empty stomach"...........well I'll eat 2-3 hours before, let it digest, and then take 3 scoops no xplode in 17oz of water, wait 15-20 minutes for it to circulate...then do your warm up, and make sure that while your working out your SLAMMING DOWN WATER if you use ANY sort of creatine....in a 2 hour work out i'll go thru 4-5 17oz bottles of water...so that should give you an idea of how much to drink.  Also, before you leave the house (unless u workout at home) make a GOOD protien/whey drink.  I personally use GNC Mega Whey Extreme (3 scoops) in 17oz of water...shake it good and chug it down RIGHT AFTER your workout....it recommends waiting 30 minutes, but forget that....those 30 minutes are valuable protien times!!!

BTW, to gain weight....EAT AS MUCH SHIZNIT AS YOU CAN!!!!  thats healthy that is...  Also, i'm starting to take GNC Weight Gainer 2200....yea it makes you fat quick...so MAKE SURE YOU WORK OUT @$$ off or it WILL turn and stay into fat...but if you turn it into fat, and then work it off into muscle you'll be happy with your body........and gain about 15lbs like I have so far Smile

Right now im off of it because it makes me break out all over my face and back, so unfortuanetly i need to find a replacement. Just picked up GNC 100% Whey Protein and going to pick up muscle milk soon. Ill take the advice you gave alex so far. Thanks for replying even though this isn't my topic lol.

Alex, i was the same way, i was REALLY hessitant about taking ANY supplements because i had always herd about the "negative" effects they had on the body....little did i know, not all supplements are "steroids"...no, supplements arent a complete nessesity...but if your looking for MUCH faster gains...they are the way to go...creatine,weight gainers, whey protien, and "PUMP" supplements, if taken correctly, and in a controlled fassion, have little to no negative effects on the body.

but as the shepherd said.... E.B.G.B.....you gotta Eat Big, to Get Big.

Thank you very much for all the replies so far guys. I've been trying to eat more than i usually do and i plan to keep going. I got my dumbells and a barbell the other day so now i'll be more motivated to workout because i have more weight to lift now than i did with my old dumbells. Now i need a workout routine. Can anyone suggest a routine or link me to a thread in this forum where i can find routines. I don't have much time to look the forum so if anyone can help i'll really appreciate it.
