I've started getting a lot more serious about working out and am just about done with my 3lb bucket of whey protein. My question is, will I notice significant gains by just taking in my recommended amount of protein + good nutrition? (BTW I'm not exactly sure what that is, I'm about 6'4"-6'5", 188lbs) I'm trying to do this as naturally as possible because my parents are fairly anal about me using anything but protein. I have been interested in creatine because I've heard it helps out with strength a lot. Though I would like to avoid using it if there is anything unknown about it, or possible side effects. Anyways hope that made sense, thanks all.

You sure will.

I noticed my biggest gains when I started a bulk diet. That was all real food.

Creatine is a big plus for me.

If your parents are anal about this, at least they care enough. There's plenty of research on creatine. There's been really nothing in regards to side-effects other then if you take too much, stomach discomfort. It's also debated if it's a good idea for a teenager to take it.. 18 and under. So if you are still in school (high school) skip it. Wait till your 20's.

Concentrate now on a good diet (that most high school kids don't get nor college kids). And EAT. A lot of good, real foods. Protein shakes are nothing more then a supplement to you. 2-3x a day.. max.

Honestly, you will get the best gains from a good diet. Protein will help supplement that. Training hard, the correctly will help. And creatine later will help as well.

Take a multi-vitamin daily as an insurance policy in case you have a bad eating day.

Stick to the real foods. When I was 16 (not saying you are, no idea how old you are), I was always looking for the magic pill and powder. Until age 30, I never bothered to figure out the magic pill was in the fridge behind me. Once I started eating.. REALLY eating, the gains came quick and stayed.

It's such an overlooked aspect of training. What you do out of the gym is really where things are gonna happen.

Most definitely yes.

Well.. most places you will read say somewhere in the .8 to 1 g per lb of body weight.

Yet it really depends on your goals and diet.

At the moment, I'm closer to 1.25-1.45g of protein per lb of body weight.

Drink your water. Very important. 1+ gallons a day.

Start off with the 1g of protein per lb of body weight and then maybe up it to a max of 1.5

Try and get most of it from real food sources and only supplement maybe 2-3x a day.

This meal plan is working great for me I just basically eat all the highest protein foods I can get and top them off with shakes. HOWEVER...I am cutting right now, you want to bulk. I would take Leslie's recommendations of 20cal per lb of body weight. In other words 3760 cal a day, once a week cardio and lots of lifting. You will want to eat alot more than me and that can be difficult. At one point I was at 3900cal a day. Add more fish, turkey and lean beef, that's easy calories and protein. Creatine is already in your body, you want to up it by taking the supplements. I would say it's a good argument for the parentals if your atleast 19-20.
